The humble street lantern has stood as a symbol of safety and civilization since gas lighting first transformed European and American cities in the early 1800s, turning once-treacherous nighttime streets into passable, navigable spaces. This particular style, with its pyramidal glass panels and ornate cast ironwork, echoes a design language largely unchanged for over a century, built for a purpose that has never gone out of style: pushing back the dark just enough to let people feel safe walking through it. There is something quietly poetic about photographing a light built purely to be useful. It never asked to be beautiful. It only had to be seen, and on a night like this, soaked in rain and standing entirely alone, it became something else entirely.
