Where Peace Decided to Rest
Note from the Photographer
The Mourning Dove (Zenaida macroura) carries one of the most poetic names in the animal kingdom, its genus Zenaida was bestowed in 1838 by the French naturalist Charles Lucien Bonaparte, named in tender honor of his wife, Zénaïde Bonaparte. The species name macroura derives from the Ancient Greek meaning "long-tailed," a nod to its elegant, tapered silhouette. Across centuries and cultures, the Mourning Dove has stood as a symbol of peace, love, and spiritual devotion. Its soft haunting coo interpreted as prayers carried across distance, and in the Cherokee tradition, as a song of lasting grief and devotion after losing a mate. In Christianity, it is deeply tied to the Holy Spirit, and its appearance has long been regarded as a message of hope, forgiveness, and inner peace. Few birds carry so much meaning in so quiet a song.
