Annapolis Rock is a striking quartzite outcropping along the South Mountain ridgeline in Maryland, sitting atop the Appalachian Trail with sweeping views to the west over the Cumberland Valley and Greenbrier Lake. The surrounding South Mountain was the site of a lesser-known but pivotal Civil War battle in September 1862, when General McClellan's Union Army of the Potomac dislodged General Lee's Confederate forces from these very ridges before the bloodier clash at Antietam just days later. The rock itself is bullet-hard quartzite, characterized by smooth bulges and long horizontal fractures, shaped by the ancient collision of tectonic plates that formed the supercontinent Pangea roughly 300 million years ago. Today it remains one of the most iconic vistas along the entire Appalachian Trail in Maryland, where a resident caretaker greets summer hikers before they catch the famous westward sunset from its edge.
